National Express Goes Green for Glastonbury 2023

Four double decker buses lined up

National Express is offering Bristol music-lovers a greener way to travel to this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

To mark Earth Day (22 April), the UK’s leading public transport operator has announced it will be operating a fleet of zero-emission double decker electric buses for the first time. Running from 20 - 26 June, the services will transport festival-goers on a high frequency ‘shuttle-bus’ service from Bristol Bus & Coach Station direct to Worthy Farm.

The buses produce zero carbon emissions at the tailpipe. Each fully charged electric bus can run up to 173 miles, saving 348kg of carbon emissions compared with diesel buses. National Express will partner with EV fleet specialists Zenobē who will bring their expertise in electric fleet infrastructure and operations to this extension of their EV delivery programme, incorporating sustainable event and festival transport.

A YouGov study conducted in December found that 4 in 10 of adults (aged under 45) who had changed their mode of transport in the last three months said they did so because they were increasingly conscious of their environmental impact.

Dharel Patel, Head of Environment and Sustainability at National Express UK, said: “We’re pleased to be able to run these zero emission buses for the very first time to Glastonbury, a festival which has always had sustainability at its very core.

“It’s encouraging to see that more and more people are ditching their cars and switching to environmentally-friendly public transport, which is why we continuously invest in upgrading our vehicles to the cleanest, most efficient fleet to help people make important sustainable choices when planning their travel.”

Travelling by electric bus is the most reliable and greenest way to get to Glastonbury - it’s cheaper than rail and good for the environment as the least carbon-intensive public transport option.

As the official coach travel partner for Glastonbury, National Express will be operating special services from over 60 locations across the country direct to the festival gates, meaning revellers haven’t got far to go to secure the best spots to pitch-up. The company is committed to leading the modal shift from private cars to sustainable public transport, with the aim of operating a completely zero-emission bus fleet by 2030. For more information see www.mobicogroup.com/sustainability.

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2119 adults, of which 81 adults said they had changed mode of transport in the last three months (57 of which were aged under 45). Fieldwork was undertaken between 22nd - 23rd December 2022. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all UK adults (aged 18+).
